Tapbacks18

Qn

An attempt to bring the Tapbacks feature from iOS 18+ down to iOS 15 / 16 / 17.

Features

  • A round smiley button beside the six classic tapbacks opens the emoji keyboard; the picked emoji is sent as a tapback.
  • You can even drop any emoji into the message of someone using iOS 18+ who is not jailbroken 👀
  • Emoji from others show up in the Tapback bubble, including from iOS 18+ non jailbroken devices.
  • Between devices that all have Tapbacks18, the emoji lands on the exact message, photos and files included.
  • Notifications and the conversation list preview show the emoji tapback ("Reacted 🔥 to “…”") instead of "Loved …".
  • Compatible with EmojiPort.
  • Experimental “Native emoji tapbacks”

Known limitations

  • Sticker tapbacks from iOS 18 (amt 2007/3007) become a plain-text message ("Reacted with a sticker").
  • If the tweak is not loaded (e.g. reboot into jailed mode), emoji tapbacks show as hearts.
  • iOS 16/17 devices without the tweak may not display amt 2006 at all.
  • The pinned-conversation tapback bubble does not show emoji.
  • Group circles: classic tapbacks in the extra circles are drawn with SF Symbols (not ChatKit's own glyphs); at most 4 circles are shown; long-press on an extra circle and sent-message platters (circles to the right) are not fully tested.

Tweaks

1.0.3

  • Fixed the emoji button going off screen when the tapback bar is wide.
  • Performance improvements.

1.0.2

  • The emoji tapback text ("Reacted 🔥 to “…”") now follows the device language.

1.0.1

  • Tidier footer notes in settings.

1.0.0

  • First stable release.
  • Fixed Messages crashing when you open the tapback picker on a message you already reacted to with an emoji (for example to change or remove it). The heart is no longer shown as selected, and the smiley button now shows your emoji right away.
  • Notifications and the conversation list preview now show the emoji tapback ("Reacted 🔥 to “…”") instead of "Loved …".
  • iOS 15 support is still experimental.

0.0.1~b3

  • Group chat support: one circle per person like iOS 18, and the "who reacted" panel shows which emoji each person used.
  • The "+" button beside the tapbacks is now a smiley button.
  • Faster response when opening the emoji keyboard.
  • New settings and package icons.
  • Experimental iOS 15 support. Not tested on a real device yet, and the "Native emoji tapbacks" option (Tapbacks18IDS) is not available there.
